I thought it would be fun to start a list of fun places to visit with kids. tld mentioned a few in her reply "Happy New Year" and I thought we could put them all in one place so when we travel, we can check them out. We love to visit children's museums, natural history museums, zoos, and science museums. Below are a few favorites from recent trips.

  • Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art - Amherst, MA. The exhibits are kid-friendly and provide an excellent introduction to art museums. There is a studio for participating in projects and a library with more than 2500 picture books. The store is one of my favorites and includes books, cards, posters, and other exciting picture book-related toys, games and apparel (we love the logo and bought tshirts for the kids in addition to cards, books, etc.).
  • Museum of the Earth - Ithaca, NY. Walk through history viewing fossils from the pre-cambrian to the present See a right whale skeleton, mastodon, and tyrannosaurus skull. We all enjoyed seeing the numerous animals that used to live in upstate New York. There are also lots of fossils kids can touch and an area to search for your own fossil.
  • CMEE - Children's Museum of the East End - Bridgehamption/Sag Harbor, NY. A significant amount of planning went into creating this space for young children. It's all about interacting with the exhibits from serving (fake) ice cream to making (fake) potato chips and sailing a pirate ship. Everything can be touched and/or played with. The is an art studio and infant area. It was a fantasyland for our preschooler and toddler.

These involves the whole class and can accommodate small groups of children. All that is needed is bed sheets n pots n pans for drums. The kids have a blast at new yrs night :).

Arizona Science Center - Phoenix, Arizona

Mesa Southwest Museum - Mesa, Arizona
The Mesa Southwest Museum is Arizona's premier museum of cultural and natural history, exploring the Southwest's history from the time before the dinosaurs to the present day. See the largest collection of dinosaur fossils in the state, visit a Spanish mission, search for the Dutchman's lost treasure, pan for gold in the History Courtyard, and more.

McCormick Stillman Railroad Park - Scottsdale, AZ
Paradise and Pacific Railroad was the first attraction to the park and continues to be its centerpiece. Its built and operated as an exact 5/12 (5 inches equals one foot) reproduction of a Colorado narrow gauge railroad. The Paradise and Pacific Railroad carries delighted passengers throughout the park on a one mile track. The railroad features three steam locomotives, 2 diesel engines, several scale model cars, a turntable, water tank, trestles, and a 32 x 200 train shed providing protection from the elements. The train shed also houses a complete machine shop for building and maintaining the railroad. Also carousel, playgrounds, picnic areas etc.
