Weekly menu - 20 Mar 06

Last week's menu went reasonably well. I had forgotten about a Board meeting on Thursday so we didn't make the fish and I had a lot of leftover chicken so we made fajitas on Saturday instead of the meatloaf...

Dinner

  • Sunday - Turkey meatloaf with mashed potatoes and celery root (Baby scavenger loved the meatloaf, B had a bit of each but ended up eating bread with butter)
  • Monday - Meatloaf and potatoes again (the kids will get Mac and Cheese)
  • Tuesday - Split pea soup with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (I love soup - one day my kids might too)
  • Wednesday - Fish in chips with salad (I'll post the recipe if anyone in my family likes it)
  • Thursday - Peppers with goat cheese in tortillas (the kids may not eat the peppers)
  • Friday - Pizza night, Trader Joes pizza and spinach and feta on lavash
  • Saturday - Lasagna

Lunches (a loose plan)

  • Monday - Meatloaf or chicken, carrots (shredded for the little one), strawberries, zucchini bread (from Trader Joes - no nuts), and cheese
  • Tuesday - Mac and cheese, corn, pear, hotdog, cheese
  • Wednesday - 1/2 Pastrami sandwich, orange or banana, peas, pirate booty, cheese
  • Thursday - Bread with butter and jam, broccoli, strawberries, crackers, cheese
  • Friday - zucchini bread with cream cheese, edamame, pear, pirate booty, cheese

You're off to a great start!

Good job making your meal plan and basically sticking with it! I never did get my menu made up for last week. I can't even remember a single thing I coooked, although I'm positive everyone ate! Must not have been very memorable.

We have a visitor (Grandma!) coming this week, so I really should figure out what I'll be cooking. My mom loves shopping, so I'm sure we'll hit Costco and the grocery store at least once each, if not more.

Today we have neighbors (ages 5 and 3) coming over after preschool. They'll be staying for lunch, so I think we'll have quesadilla, salsa and veggie sticks or fruit salad. For dinner tonight probably chicken or fish. I really need to get it together so I can relax with my mom instead of frantically shopping and cooking everything last minute.

Meal plans

Thanks! It's challenging. I saw a friend today who told me that no matter how many people she hires to help her, she still has difficulty with the meals. Somehow I found that relieving although I spent the next ten minutes thinking about how I would handle meal planning if I had three times the disposable income. Tonight went according to plan except I was really hungry when I came home so we were all snacking before dinner. Gotta start the split pea soup for tomorrow's dinner...

Split pea soup

FYI - my two won't eat split pea soup when it's called by it's proper name. We refer to it as "ham soup" and then it's something edible to them :) Of course, I use a big ham bone and chunks of ham in it, so it does actually contain ham. I also add onion, carrots and celery in tiny pieces (smaller than the chunks of ham), so they eat them unknowingly, too.

Getting the kids to try new foods

We've started a game with B where he has to close his eyes, taste the food, and guess what's in it. He guessed peas for the split pea soup. So far it's gotten him to try a bunch of different foods that he otherwise would have just complained about. I'm hoping he will get used to some of the foods and eat them later in life. I just started eating brussel sprouts - my mom loves them - so I figure it's never too late to learn to like a vegetable.
