H1N1 Flu-Staying Calm, Staying Informed

The H1N1 Flu virus is real but there are real things you can do to protect you and your family. I must admit, I am a bit of a germaphobe so this pandemic has me on my toes. I had looked at many sites (and there are many) about this outbreak and found the CDC's site the best. Check out www.cdc.gov. They are updating the reported cases and deaths daily and have several articles about how to stay healthy..... My family has decided to forgo any public enclosed quarters like planes, subways, museums, etc with the kids for now. We are already very vigilant about washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home when sick so we have that covered. I did the food shopping without the kids this week and will push some extra vitamin C just to be safe. It's also a good idea to check in with your child's school to see what safety measures they have in place during this pandemic. My daughter's school sent out an email to all parents reminding us of their health & wellness policy. I also spoke directly to the Director of the school. She told me she is speaking to each teacher every morning to check in on who is out sick and who was sent home, if anyone. She reassured me that according to school policy, they will send a child home who is contagious (fever, bad cough, etc). I will update this post with any new great web sites or new information I find. As of this post, my state has confirmed 7 cases of the H1N1 Flu virus. All patients are recovering according to my states CDC. Stay calm, stay informed.

H1N1 in CA

We have confirmed cases in CA as well. B's is in a Spanish Immersion program with lots of families from Mexico but there are no cases in our school district. For us, this is a great teaching opportunity to learn better hand washing skills. Although the idea of H1N1 is scary, there are lots of other diseases that are also scary.

Although we are continuing to go about our days including planned events, I have stocked up on a few items in case we have to stay at home for extended periods of time. We have lots of tissues, toilet paper, applesauce/canned fruit, nuts, chicken stock/other soup, pasta, frozen vegetables, and soy milk (for me but the kids will drink it and only the open container needs to be refrigerated), plus movies, books, and arts & crafts. The main item I am missing is an electrolyte replacement. The kids like Gatorade but I prefer coconut water. I will probably get a flat of coconut water on my next trip to Costco. I'm sure there are other items we would want if we were all at home for a few days but at least we have the basics.

Good thinking

Sounds like you have a good plan! I didn't know about the coconut water. Will learn more about that and use in the future. My son had croup this past weekend and I got a bit unnerved! But he is fine now and running all over the house. I have several MD friends and they are all calm as is my kids pediatrician so I am taking their lead. Let's hope this is the last pandemic we discuss!!
