Earth Day-a great teaching momentAs a parent I love when a teaching moment presents itself. Earth Day is one of those moments. My 4 year old daughter loves bugs & worms and my 2 year old son loves flowers (specifically "mulups" or as we adults call them Tulips) so it is easy to start a conversation with them about nature. Get your kids outside and you'll be surprised how easy it is to start talking about nature....(more) The kid's school recycles, we recycle at home and talk about conservation a lot. But maybe those of us who are already doing little things to help Mother Earth, can go a step farther this year. How about turning off the TV for a whole day....too much for ya? Ok, how about cutting TV time in half this spring & summer and get outside. Sound better? How about turning off the bath water before it hits the overflow drain. We are guilty of too much water in the bath which is not just a conservation issue but also a safety issue for smaller ones. We joined a CSA with our neighbors (more about that in a later post) and are considering a CSF (community supported fishery). For the smaller set, just getting them interested in the out of doors is a great start. I print out coloring pages of the Earth, flowers and bugs. It really isnt ever too soon to start teaching kids about the beauty of our world and their responsibility to conserve it. Happy Earth Day...now get outside!
