Happy Mother's Day and Salt Dough recipe

Happy Mother's Day!

I made a huge amount of salt dough today for kids to enjoy. I was impressed by how easy it was to make and how much fun the kids had sculpting it. I also really like the idea of making something like this from basic ingredients at home so the kids can see the process instead of just going to the store to buy it...

Basic Salt Dough Recipe

1 c. flour (white works well)
1/2 c. salt (fine grained)
about 1/2 c. water
food coloring

Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Add the food coloring to the water and mix. Slowly add the water and mix to a consistency that is easy to shape. The dough should dry in about two days, if you want to save something.

Large batch of salt dough

We ended up making twelve batches of the dough recipe below in a rainbow of colors. Most of our colors were beautiful pastels (green, blue, yellow, pink, purple, teal, and chartreuse).

5 c. white flour
1 26 ounce container of salt (Morton's is what we used)
a little more than 2 1/2 c. water
a box of food coloring

Mix the flour and salt. Add the food coloring to the water, mix, and then add to the flour mixture slowly. You may be surprised by how much dye is needed to make some of the colors.

Hope you have a wonderful day!
